Terry Wylie Artist
My art career started early. I enthusiastically pursued drawing at an early age and ventured into charcoal and pastels while in middle school. After high school I thought I wanted to be a commercial artist and for a while that was the path I was on. In the late 80s, I was fortunate enough to work for several newspapers, advertising agencies and even publishers. But, as with many things in life, the ball bounced into another court and my life took a turn towards the sea.
I joined the Navy in 1989 and immersed myself into my Navy career. There was not a lot of time for art, between serving on 9 ships and raising a family. My experiences are forever part of who I am and I have seen the world through a Sailors eyes. There is nothing like experiencing the sea onboard a Frigate or navigating the Suez Canal onboard an Aircraft Carrier. The total darkness of a night a sea or the pounding of an angry sea. I have experienced all of this first hand and it helps me bring my Nautical Paintings to life.
I have pursued all types of art including Portraits, Landscapes, Figure Paintings, Wildlife, Pets, Architecture, Industrial, Ala Prima and Plien Air. I believe that one discipline informs another. Giving my art a unique and distinctive style.
I have developed into a more expressive representational artist, who captures a moment with light and movement transporting the viewer to that location in time and space.
I continue to work for the Navy as a contractor and pursue my Fine Art in National, Regional and local shows. I do take commissions but I am often engaged and I may have to work you into my schedule.
I am the President of Chesapeake Bay Watercolorist and the Vice President of the Virginia Water Color Society. I love the fellowship and company of all kinds of artist. These organizations have enriched my life in so many ways and I am very grateful.
I greet each new season with joy and wonderment in my pursuit and growth as an artist. My best painting is the one I am doing next and I can’t wait to see it!
